Post-menopausal hormonal therapy (and steroid use)

Post-menopausal hormonal treatment is a well-studied treatment for the symptoms of menopause. It is used in women to prevent mood swings, hot flashes, vaginal dryness, urinary tract infections, osteoporosis, sleep disorders and much more.

Basics of post-menopausal therapy

doctors talking about postmenopausal hormonal therapyPost-menopausal therapy may be estrogen-only therapy or estrogen given in combination with progesterone (both are female steroidal hormones, but not anabolic hormones). Combination therapy is better for women with the uterus as it helps reduce the risk of uterine cancer.

Such therapy can be started in any post-menopausal women with severe symptoms. In some women, menopause may begin early in the 40ies. Hormonal therapy helps women look better, improves bone and skin health, reduces the risk of depression and mood disorders, improve sleep quality. Thus it may help improve the quality of life.

However, post-menopausal therapy is not entirely risk-free, and it should be carried out only for as long as necessary. Prolonged hormonal treatment with estrogen and progesterone may increase the risk of breast and uttering cancers. It may also increase blood clotting thus increasing the risk of stroke and other vascular conditions.

Post-menopausal hormonal therapy with estrogens and progesterone may also have an adverse effect on the sports performance. Research indicates that women on these hormones have suppressed production of anabolic hormones. It means slower gains with training when compared to women not taking post-menopausal hormonal therapy.

Estrogen is also known to suppress the muscles growth directly. Further, therapy with estrogens increase the levels of cortisol, thus increasing the breakdown of muscular tissue.

Anabolic therapy in a post-menopausal woman

It is altogether a different story. It involves using anabolic steroids that are derivatives of male hormones. Anabolic steroids may help post-menopausal women in multiple ways, although very little medical research is done into the subject.

Anabolic steroids in post-menopausal women can help strengthen bones and joints. Anabolic steroids are known to promote the collagen production in postmenopausal women. It means beautiful looking skin, healthy joints, and stronger bones, along with better muscle strength.

Anabolic steroids may also help improve sexual arousal or libido in postmenopausal women. In many women therapy with estrogens and progesterone may help with other symptoms, but it may not help with sexual health.

Anabolic steroids are known to increase the growth of clitoris in women; it is something that is not desired by young women. However, in postmenopausal women, anabolic steroids may help slow down the decline of atrophic changes of urogenital organs. It means better vaginal health, fewer episodes of infections, and much more.

Further, anabolic steroids will help improve blood parameters. Anabolic steroids stimulate the production of blood cells.

Although anabolic steroids can have a range of health benefits in postmenopausal women, they are not well studied for safety. They may make skin look young, but at higher doses, they may also increase the growth of facial hair, and cause changes in the voice.

Postmenopausal can take anabolic steroids, and they may benefit a lot. Anabolic steroids can be used to treat or prevent disease conditions, improve sports performance, or used as a part of the anti-aging program.

However, it is essential to understand that anabolic steroids may not mix well with postmenopausal hormonal therapy (with estrogens and progesterone). Thus if a woman is on such treatment, then anabolic steroids should be used with caution or even better in consultation with a medical specialist.
