List of diseases which we can treat with Steroids

Most of the synthetic analogs of testosterone and anabolic steroids were created by medical researchers or large pharmaceutical companies to treat various medical conditions. Although they may be widely used to improve sports performance, but it does not mean that they have no role in medicine.

Here are some of the medical conditions in which anabolic steroids may help (some of the uses are FDA approved, while others not):

Primary hypogonadism or delayed puberty in boys

in some boys either due to genetics or other inborn errors testicles may fail to develop correctly. It can mean an excessive delay in the development of male characteristics like changes in the voice, muscles, growth of body hair, sexual maturity, and so on.  Generally, doctors would use long-acting testosterone injections in such cases, and treatment would continue for years.

Secondary testicular failure

may occur due to the prolonged treatment of cancer, damage due to alcohol use, heavy metal toxicity, or for some other medical causes.

Treatment of cachexia

means treating weight loss of weakness due to prolonged illness. It may not be FDA approved indication, but still, steroids are frequently used for the purpose. Outside the US, such use of steroids is completely legal. HIV is one of the conditions characterized by severe wasting in some patients and anabolic steroids may help in such cases. Similarly, it may help gain weight and recover faster after a surgery. Steroids may also help in wasting due to pulmonary diseases, liver failure, renal failure. Accelerating recovery after severe burns is another indication.

Severe anemia

anabolic steroids are known to stimulate the formation of red blood cells; thus, they may have a role in the treatment of severe anemia.

Post-traumatic recovery

anabolic steroids are good for bone health, they increase bone density. Thus, they may also help recover faster from trauma. They may help bones heal more quickly.

it may have a role in treating brittle bones, especially in men. Researchers are studying its role for female bone health.

Hormone replacement therapy

or as a part of the antiaging program, especially in men. It is known that in many men testosterone levels start decreasing sharply after the 40ies. Low testosterone results in reduced sexual performance, lack of energy, mood swings, higher risk of depression. A low dosage of long-acting testosterone may help alleviate these age-related symptoms. At present hormone replacement therapy in men is not FDA approved, though many studies have shown benefits for aging men.

Treating sexual disorders in men

especially if these conditions are proven to be related to low levels of testosterone. Testosterone injection or dermal patch can help in such cases.

Improving libido in women

that may sound a bit strange, but testosterone may help improve sex drive even in women. Notably, in post-menopausal women, there is a steep decline in testosterone levels resulting in lost interest in sex. Although hormone replacement therapy with female hormones (estrogen and progesterone) is FDA approved, but testosterone therapy remains a neglected thing, despite its proven effectiveness. Moreover, testosterone may also help women overcome other symptoms of menopause like osteoporosis, mood swings, and so on.

Thus, steroids should not be regarded merely as performance-enhancing substances; they have numerous medical uses. Unfortunately, FDA has been slow to approve them for various medical conditions.
